Triathlons

For those who don't know, a triathlon is basically a swim- bike- run sporting event. What's funny is it is a relatively new sport, despite the (or my) thought it must have been invented in ancient Greek times along with the marathon. It actually began in an informal way in California in the late 1970's and grew from there, finally being incorporated into the Olympics in 2004.

When most people think of Triathlons, they think of the Hawaiin Ironman shown on television every year. In reality, there are three common distances in sanctioned triathlon events:

Sprint (approx) 1/2 mile swim, 20k bike and 5k run
Olympic 1.5k (.93 mile) swim, 40k (24.8 mile) bike & 10k (6.2 mile) run
Ironman 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run

Different locations have slight variations on these due to individual course capacity.

Me? I'm not crazy - my goal is a sprint (though the one I'm signing up for is slightly longer than that - but much shorter than the Olympic distance.....)

More information is located on the USA Triathlon website (of which I am now a proud member).
